We provide education, therapy and wellbeing to help bullied and traumatised children

Story

Thank you for taking part in the Corporate Banking Senior Leadership Conference Quiz on Tuesday, 11 June 2019.

Your donations will go directly to the Red Balloon Learner Centres to enable them to continue their valuable work with vulnerable children.
In addition Barclays will match our fund raising, doubling your contributions to this worthwhile charity.

Here's a little more information about them:

Red Balloon provides an educational and therapeutic programme for young people aged 11 to 18 who have been traumatised by severe bullying or other circumstances and have self-excluded from mainstream school. It is designed to rebuild students’ self-confidence, rekindle their desire to learn and succeed, and enable them to return to mainstream school or move on to appropriate special or further education, training or work.

Red Balloon runs five Learner Centres. Four are based in domestic houses in Cambridge, Norwich, NW London and Reading. They do not resemble schools and offer a safe learning environment for our students. The fifth is a virtual online service, Red Balloon of the Air (RBAir) headquartered in Cambridge.

All of our Learner Centres operate on a term-based programme (Monday - Friday, 9:30 - 4:30). Following an individual timetable, students study curricular subjects such as English, Maths, Science, PSHE and History. The programme reflects each individual student’s needs and personal goals, enabling them to make good progress at KS3 or KS4. Fifty percent of Red Balloon's programme is dedicated to well-being support and therapy. At all the Learner Centres, students are offered a range of therapeutic interventions via music, art, and drama therapies, amongst others. RBAir students access their education and therapy online and have frequent face-to-face contact with their link professional (student mentor), as well as coming together with other online students for regular social activities.

Over the last 22 years, Red Balloon has supported approximately 700 young people - 176 in the previous academic year alone. The online provision (RBAir) increased students numbers by 30% to 104 in the 2017/18.

Most young people who join Red Balloon have been out of education for serveral months, sometimes years. At Red Balloon, 75% of students on average improve attendance to over 70%. At the end of their time with Red Balloon, 85%-90% of students either return to secondary education or move on to apprenticeship or work.

So much of what allows Red Balloon to turn around the lives of young people is only possible thanks to the enthusiasm and generosity of our supporters. Gifts and donations help their programme to be accesbible and to provide a first-class tailored service for every young person who needs their help.

Thank you very much.

About the charity

16,000 children in the UK are so badly bullied that they cannot go to school. The aim of Red Balloon is to aid their recovery by providing them with an 'intensive care' full-time academic and personal and social education programme so that they can return to mainstream school or go on to college.
