We are setting out to climb Africa’s highest mountain, Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania on Sept 14th, speaking out over two thousand Peace Messages on the way to the summit at 5,895 metres, on Sept 21st, U.N. Peace Day. Here in the crater (dormant we hope!) we will be speaking out a Peace Message from every nation on Earth as part of the Peace Ceremony . This is a bid to make a difference to the peace and harmony of the planet. It is a focus on all nations coming together in peace... peace not only for humanity but for the environment of our planet.
It will by no means be easy... Many of us have never climbed a mountain before! All of us will be struggling to find sanity in the rarified air giving us altitude sickness! Between us we will be pulling a tyre holding all the Peace Messages!Three of us are well into pensioner age!
It will give us huge strength to know that our efforts are helping raise funds for TREE AID, for their planting trees project in Ethiopia. TREE AID was set up here in response to the 1980's drought and famine as a way of tackling the devastating resulting poverty. As similar conditions again sweep the horn of Africa, causing untold heartache and human tradgedy, we know that planting trees will not only help the grass roots suvival of the local people, but also the longer term environmental protection on which life depends... indeed that of the whole Earth. TREE AID is hoping to further their work in this area.
