Story

10k Run to support Barts & The London Charity

PLEASE SPONSOR OUR RUNNERS!!!!

CMS Cameron McKenna LLP have pledged to help Barts & The London Charity over the course of the next 3 years by way of a generous corporate donation.  CMS are also being pro-active in their efforts to help fundraise and promote volunteering for the Charity.  It would be so easy to sit back and make a financial contribution without actually making any personal effort.  Therefore volunteers from across the CMS firm have decided to participate in this year's 10k run, as well as helping out with other forthcoming volunteering exercises.  Please read on for more information, before digging deep into your wallets and giving generously to this very worthwhile cause.

The money you raise will be split as follows:

Cystic Fibrosis (The London Chest Hospital)

Trauma & Emergency Care (The Royal London Hospital)

Prostate Cancer Research (Barts Hospital)

Your support will bring real benefit to patients now and in the future!

How CMS Money is being Spent

CMS have pledged to help in a number of areas:

Advanced Prostate Cancer Trial

This is a trial to look at molecular markers in circulating cancer cells and their use in determining how patients will respond to treatment. Currently all patients with advanced prostate cancer undergo a gruelling six months of chemotherapy treatment, but only around 30% respond to therapy. Desired outcome is to stop patients receiving chemotherapy that will be ineffective, together with many unpleasant side effects associated with the treatment. 10 patients are currently recruited with an additional 20 required for the trial.  Likely that finding will influence the national approach to advanced prostate cancer.

Museum Trips for children at The Children’s Hospital, Royal London

This is a pilot project to provide an opportunity for children, young people and their families to participate in activities in London. Participants are young patients with long term conditions.  Patients will go on a particular visit or activity, with the helpf of a CMS volunteer and be asked to write a review.  Aim to visit 20-30 local educational and engagement attractions in total, including museums, galleries and theatres.  Outings will give patients the opportunity to learn outside the classroom, enhance their writing abilities, teach them to be aware of their surroundings and consider other people/children when recommending who each attraction is suitable for.

(Projects for the Elderly)

Everything I am…

Oral history project recording patients’ reminiscences. An experienced community workshop facilitator (and writer) talks to patients, taking notes and recording their stories.  Individual attention encourages patients to value their lives and look to the future.  Digital photos to document the process.  Builds bonds between patients and staff.

Green Candle Dance Company

Recreational movement – contributes to physiological and psychological well-being.  Patients benefit from social interaction and a growth in self confidence and self esteem.  Props used. e.g. beautiful colour fabrics, ribbon sticks, balloons, feathers etc.  Staff training is part of the programme so dance can be used to increase mobility and boost confidence on an ongoing basis.  Has been shown to change staff’s attitude to patients and build relationships.

Please give generously! – CMS as a firm will match donations up to £300 per person taking part in this event so the more YOU give the more WE give!
