We're aiming to raise £10,000 - this will cover the cost of 2 years' of training for 2 disadvantaged young people at Dr B's Restaurant in Harrogate.

Dr. B's specialises in training young people with learning difficulties for the real world of work by operating a commercially viable restaurant and coffee shop.  This is staffed by young people who have varying degrees of learning difficulties as well as sensitive social backgrounds.

In line with Barnardo's wider vision, the aim of Dr B's is to give young people with learning difficulties the chance to receive a vocational education focused on a positive outcome - employability and the opportunity to enjoy and achieve in life.

The training and development costs associated with taking these young people through their training and NVQs is considerably higher than that of a ‘normal’ child.  Due to the additional level of preparation required for some trainees, the total cost of their NVQ training at Dr. B’s can amount to £2,500 per person compared to typical average costs of £950.  It is estimated that the average cost for each young person to complete their NVQ training (Levels 1 & 2) is £5,000.
