Yes, we are the Cambridge Blue Belles, four feisty women on a mission. Our mission? To complete the Trailwalkers challenge of walking 100k (that's 60 miles, yes, 60 miles) in under 30 hours. That means walking through the night, going without sleep, getting sore feet and, no doubt, singing some pretty dodgy songs along the way.
As you can see from our photos we can do exercise and we can point, two great attributes for long-distance walkers.
So who are we? Let us introduce ourselves.
Firstly there's Pam. She's a psychotherapist working with couples experiencing relationship and/or sexual difficulties. That's a topic that should keep us talking for some of the way at least! The most physically challenging thing she's done before now is getting fit after a hip replacement which was pretty tough. She's most looking forward to the challenge and uncertainty of it all and least looking forward to blisters and smelly feet. Her dream walkers are the Cambridge Blue Belles so we're on to a winner there. Let's see if she still thinks the same after 100k!
Next, there's Jessica. She's a hospital doctor specialising in respiratory and general medicine (which could come in useful). The most physically challenging thing she's done before now is starting to run again after forty years of inactivity! She's most looking forward to the food stops, the sense of camaraderie and the achievement of walking 100k, and least looking forward to walking in the dark. Her dream companion on a walk would be Monty, her springer spaniel (Awww)
Then there's Fran. Fran is an editor at Cambridge University Press and a yoga teacher (again, could be handy). The most physically challenging thing she's done before the 100k walk is training for the Cambridge Half Marathon (March 2013). Good luck, Fran! The things she's most looking forward to are the camaraderie, the Gurkhas (!) and 'the sheer bloody exhilaration'. Well, we'll see what we can do on all those fronts. She's least looking forward to possibly losing her footing in the dark and injuring herself. (That won't happen, Fran. Positive thinking now). If she could walk 100k with anyone it would be Sir Ranulph Fiennes as he could carry her when her legs give way.
Finally, there's Leigh. Leigh is a writer, editor and humanist celebrant. The most physically challenging thing she's done prior to this is the Great North Run, but that was many moons ago when she was a slip of a girl. She's most looking forward to the adventure and the unpredictability of it all and least looking forward to the last 10k which will feel like forever. If she could walk with anyone it would be Professor Brian Cox so he could point out all the star constellations during the night walk, of course. No other reason.
So, that's us. And what are we walking for? Well, we're part of the Oxfam Trailwalker Team Challenge. 550 teams of four walkers will be crossing the South Downs on the last weekend of July, finishing near Brighton. The whole challenge raises more than £1.5 million for Oxfam. And we also get to cuddle a Gurkha or two along the way - allegedly - so that's got to be worth sponsoring.
Please help us reach our target of £3,000. It is just a target and we'd love to raise more , as all the money goes to Oxfam. And it'll also help us - as we slog through the rain at 3am - to know that lots of you out there believe in us and that, therefore, we couldn't possibly let any of you down.
Below is the usual bit about donating but before we hand over to them we'd like to say a genuine big thank you to you if you've donated. And a wet raspberry to those who haven't. But that's not you is it?
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails.
