Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Please take a moment to think about just how lucky you are to go to sleep somewhere warm and safe at night, now think about the countless others who feel scared and alone every night. By donating money to this charity, or by sponsoring my abseil, YOU will have single handedly made a difference to someones life. And when you go to sleep tonight, you can rest easy knowing that someones life has been made better by your kindness and generosity.
Now please take a moment to read some of the moving stories of people whose lives have been made better by Shelter....
Domestic violence and stifling, overcrowded conditions had scarred the young life of nine-year-old Caitlin when we first met her.
Her family’s flat was so crowded that she had to share a double bed with her parents and her baby sister.
When Caitlin’s mum couldn’t take any more of her husband’s violence and decided to leave, we helped her to find a home with space for Caitlin to play, which our volunteers helped to decorate.
Shelter also arranged for Caitlin to have one-to-one support to get over the trauma of her experiences.
She has been ice skating, climbing and for trips to the park with her Shelter support worker, and she’s now settling into her new, happier homelife.
77-year old Harry was terrified that he’d be evicted after his Housing Benefit cheque was accidently posted to him instead of his landlord.
Harry was confused – he’d assumed the cheque was a delayed pension credit and had spent it. When he told the council what had happened, they offered no help.
Shelter helped Harry negotiate with his landlord to pay off the debt, and put pressure on the council to cover the arrears their mistake had caused.
They did so, and agreed that Harry could pay them back in small, affordable amounts. Harry’s health had been affected by the stress, so this was a massive relief for him.
Battling with epilepsy, asthma and learning difficulties made living on the streets hard for Greig, a single homeless man. He called our helpline in desperation just two hours after a severe attack of epilepsy – he was in no state to spend hours hunting for somewhere safe to sleep that night. Our helpline worker called round all the hostels within reach of Greig. Eventually, she found one that had a bed for the night, warning them to keep an eye on his health. She also referred Greig to a Shelter housing aid centre, where he could get long term help. With Shelter’s support, Greig was able to take the first steps towards recovering from homelessness.
