Story

Hola y gracias for visiting my fundraising page!

On Wednesday, 27 July 2016, the staff, interns, and volunteers of the GVI Playa Del Carmen, Mexico projects will be taking on a different sort of triathlon! The goal is to run 2 kilometers on the beach, go for a 1 kilometer swim in the ocean, and finish with doing 5 different yoga poses on the beach! We will be split into two teams, and the losing team has to cook dinner for the winning team.

Our goal is £1,500 GBP fundraising for our projects: Escuelita (CEIA) Coco’s Animal Welfare, and Ludoteca.

Escuelita (CEIA), is the special needs school formed by two mothers where they work with children and their own family members with different needs like autism, down syndrome, and cerebral palsy. From giving the children different types of therapies, to skills for socializing and being independent, the time and energy the staff spend on this school is simply breathtaking and inspiring. The first £565 will
go towards getting the kids new uniforms with the school’s logo and a new camera for the school.

The second project, Coco’s Animal Welfare, is an organization dedicated to reducing and controlling the stray cat and dog population of Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya. They provide a free sterilization service for stray cats and dog and a low cost for those with owners. Since their beginnings in 2009 they have sterilized over 16,000 animals and rescued and adopted over a 1,000. After recently undergoing
a major relocation and expansion of the clinic, they are still closing up on final details and need our help. The next £547 will be used for sutures and tic & flea medication.

At Ludoteca, our project in partnership with Save the Children, we give English classes and Green Action classes to the kids as well as helping them with their homework and playing games! For this project we will donate the next £200 towards clean drinking water for the kids and staff to drink throughout the day at Ludoteca and also toward training the staff to become Emergency First Responders.

Remaining donations will be spent towards materials and prizes for our summer camp project at Invasores; a territory of land occupied by people living in extreme conditions, where we teach English and Green Action lessons to children.

So the challenge will involve the following:

The 11 volunteers, interns, and staff will be going to a public beach in Playa Del Carmen. It will begin with a group warmup and splitting into the teams of two to compete.  After, we will be beginning the triathlon of
a 2K run on the beach, a 1K swim in the ocean, and finish with doing 5 different yoga poses on the beach. It’s sure to say that this will be both a physical and emotional challenge for many of us, yet our excitement is so great and our purpose so inspiring that nothing will bring us down!

Every donation makes a difference! No matter how big or small, we the volunteers and our fantastic partners in Escuelita, Coco’s, Ludo and Invasores will be forever grateful.

Thank you for the support- Gracias por su apoyo!

¡Muchas gracias!
