Story

Liverpool to Leeds Cycle in aid of St Gemma's Hospice

Thanks for taking time to visit our JustGiving page

WE DID IT- THANKS FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT- READ ON TO DISCOVER OUR ADVENTURE

IF YOU HAVE PLEDGED MONEY OFF LINE PLEASE PAY UP!

We are members of The Corner House in Moortown, which is located across the road from St Gemma's in Leeds. The hospice is the chosen charity for the club, which has supported a number of our members over the years. All the staff at the hospice do a fabulous job, they are always supportive and caring and always have time to support family and friends when they most need it. Fund raising enables the hospice to expand the facilities and services they offer, both at the hospice itself and through their support services within the wider Leeds community.

This bike ride was as a result of a converstion over a few beers. What could we do to raise some additional money for the hospice, which would not be too much of an extreme challenge ( as we are not all spring chickens!).  A bike ride along the canal we thought, over a couple of days, how difficult can that be?

Perfect weather we thought as we set off on Thursday 21st May, 18 degrees and sunny, and as we set off from Liverpool it got hotter and hotter. The first day we had some fantastic bikers sunburn, cycling 45 miles down the left side of the canal! James and Jamie who foolishly decided to go topless, were awarded with amazing patterned sunburn, due to rucksacks etc. (and we have the photographic evidence to prove it)!

Day two was equally eventful, with the sun still shining brightly, with Caroline in the tail end charley crew nearly ending up with dehydration on a canal bank due to lack of water!

The second night was the most painful, due to hours in the saddle etc. , therefore we needed a few medicinal drinks to take the pain away. Especially Duncan, who swiftly moved from red wine, to port to Baileys? Now there's a weird and wonderful combination, but at least he left off the Sambuca and woke up the next day without a hangover!

Day three and twenty two degrees sand full sun at half past eight in the morning. Lovely if your by the sea side, but not so great when cycling many miles! The day went well in the end and once we had hit Bingley we all could feel the end in sight and averaged a great pace into Leeds. Once we could see Leeds city centre, there was no stopping us. We arrived back in Leeds at three thirty on Saturday, very hot and sweaty. Many thanks Dave and Coral for meeting us and sorry for the hot and sweaty hugs!

We arrived back at the Corner House Club at four o'clock to balloons and streamers and strains of We Are The Champions. Many thanks to everyone for their support and special thanks to Bob for putting on some much needed food.

MANY THANKS TO OUR FABULOUS BACK UP CREW, MARTIN, PAT AND STEWART, WE COULD NOT HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT YOU!

WE HOPE TO EXCEED OUR TARGET OF £2,500 AND WE WILL KEEP THIS PAGES UPDATED ON OUR PROGRESS

Now it is all over we are planning next years, should it be bungee jumping or abseling- perhaps a sponsered sleep or read- much less effort.
