This is a very pertinent Charity to me. I have given a little insight to my reasons for running this event. Martin is my husband:

Martin was diagnosed with epilepsy some 7 years ago – we believe as a result of being hit full on the temple by a cricket ball. Martin has been taking Tegretol since being diagnosed in an attempt to control, or even prevent, his seizures. Unfortunately, in August 2008 he had a further, totally unexpected, seizure whilst driving my daughter and I. This was despite having had his driving licence renewed by DVLA who had carried out tests, and had consulted with both his GP and his consultant, following a statutory period of being unable to drive due to the original diagnosis. Fortunately, the seizure did not result in an accident and we all lived to tell the tale. It did, however, mean a further enforced ban on driving (which is still currently in place) and an increase in medication.

Earlier this year in June, Martin underwent brain surgery at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford in order to remove the ‘cavernoma’ which was triggering his seizures. 4 months later, and he is now ‘fit-free’, and will also be ‘drug-free’ as of early December.

We are all very lucky that all is now well. Martin lost his job as a result of his illness – he was a field-based sales Manager, and was at that time covering the whole of the UK in the wine trade.

Some families are not so fortunate and have to live with epilepsy for life. I would like to do my bit in order to help make their lives a little easier.
