We Raise funds for Motor Neurone Disease to Fund Support, Awareness, and Research

Story

As many of you know, I swim all the time. I've set myself 5k Swimathon Challenges, swam in rivers, lakes and quays and did the Great North Swim several years ago. I have never swam in the sea and I'm very scared of swallowing the water.

While in the pool I was talked into joining the team to swim the Solent by Tony, when he told me it was to raise money to benefit those with Motor Neurone Disease, I knew I wanted to be involved.

Over the years as an Occupational Therapist, I have worked with (and lost) many clients to this incurable disease. I have helped them get the right equipment and make sure their home environment will meet their needs as they deteriorate. Sadly, this never feels enough as I watch someone go through this.

These people can need help getting in and out of bed, toileting, bathing, PEG feeding, communication aids and assistance with breathing. When people did the Ice Bucket Challenge several years ago and donated to MND, that money raised funds that led to a breakthrough in research, but what we know about this disease is still limited.

The Ian Pratt Foundation aims to raise money to help fund this research and support those with the disease. If I reach my target, any off-line funds I collect, I will donate to the Motor Neurone Disease Association who are often there to step in to provide funding to some of my clients to make them comfortable.

On the same week I do my swim, my friend and colleague Carol is supporting her husband Noel, who has MND to bring a Judicial Review to the High Court to challenge the law of assisted dying. I will be thinking of them both during my swim.

Swimming 3 miles in a busy shipping lane, with the possibility of swallowing sea water on a Tuesday morning is the least I can do...so dig in your pockets lovely people, let's raise some money!
