Story
Welcome to my Just Giving page. I will be volunteering on
Africa Mercy for 6 months as a Deck Officer. While I have the skills and will to assist them with their mission to provide free medical treatment to some of the world’s poorest people, I need help to cover costs such as flights and crew fees (it’s not free to live on a boat).
The Africa Mercy is the largest non-governmental hospital ship in the world and provides free medical care to those who would no-doubt go
without if it didn't exist. It has 5 operating theatres, 4 wards and a CT
scanner. It’s 450+ crew treat men, women and children and since 1978 over half a million patients have been treated with over 2.5 million lives helped when you include community projects. This is only a drop in the ocean when you consider that every year 33 million people face catastrophic financial ruin because they or their family need surgery but it is still a ray of hope to many.
To put all of this into perspective, in my own lifetime I have been treated by our NHS hospitals numerous times and admitted on no less than 2 occasions. While my time in hospital may have been considered ‘routine’, without the free help that I received my life would be very different from the one I live now and that is assuming I had survived. What I want to do is help people who are less advantaged than myself receive the help that I (and probably you too) take for granted.
Please give freely and give generously. You really will make
a difference to someone’s life.
Thanks for all your support.
