Hernias are a huge burden in low resource countries. Hernias can be debilitating. Access to timely surgery is inadequate due lack of resources or poor finances. Some hernia sufferers in these countries, therefore, die needlessly from complications of hernias. Operation Hernia is committed to alleviating the suffering of hernia patients in these disadvantaged countries. We achieve this by offering a hernia service and by training local doctors in hernia surgery. All our surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and technicians are volunteers who fund themselves. All monies raised through donations go towards treatment of patients and training of local doctors. Your donation will transform a hernia sufferer's life. Thank you for your donation.

Story

Hi ,

As you know I retired from working at Derriford Hospital in January 2011 However to finish my nursing career I am again for the last time going back to Ghana in November this year with a team of Doctors and nurses to Takoradi and other hospitals in Ghana to perform approximately 100 hernia operations in just over a week. This is all voluntary, we do not get paid for this and the patients do not have to pay anything. However we need to individually raise more than £1000 to pay for our own flights, accommodation, plus raise money for all the equipment/medical supplies we need to to take out with us, and this is where you come in !!!

Operation Hernia changes the lifes of the people and their families we help. Many are farmers and fishermen, who are able to return to work to earn money for their families. Many have been unable to work for years and this operation as everyone knows is taken for granted here in the UK.

In rural Africa, it has been estimated that less than 1 in 5 inguinal hernias requiring surgery actually receive an operation. Few patients with neglected hernias that strangulate may not even reach a hospital, and die needlessly. In rural areas previously fit young people die because simple surgical services are unaffordable.

Operation Hernia has supported surgical services in Takoradi and Carpenter with over 15 humanitarian missions and treated over 1000 patients that otherwise would not have received a potentially life-saving operation.

If you want to read more about operation hernia please visit www.operationhernia.org.uk

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

So please dig deep and donate now!!!

Love Chris x
