Story

My next challenge involves two wheels, a Cornish pasty and a bottle of French red wine....

In October I'm taking part in a 280 mile cycle ride from Prideaux Place in Cornwall to Chateau des Ducs de Bretagne in Nantes, France in memory of my fabulous cousin Pat Wheeler.

Although I live in Jersey I spent a significant part of my childhood in Cornwall and went to secondary school in St Austell where the Mount Edgcumbe Hospice is located. My cousin was a tireless fundraiser for Cornwall Hospice Care for as long as I can remember. She was always baking for afternoon teas and cake sales, collecting clothes or selling raffle tickets in the rain. Pat was also such a very special person to me.

It was a complete shock and nightmare two years ago when Pat was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer. It was a torrid and brutal time and within just a few weeks of her diagnosis she found herself in the care of the doctors and nurses at Mount Edgcumbe hospice. They managed her pain, supported her devastated family and made sure her final days  were as comfortable as possible.

So, with this challenge I am taking on her fundraising mantle and hoping to do her proud. And although I have climbed many mountains, run a marathon and regularly whack a tennis ball round a court, cycling long distances is completely new to me. I'm determined to succeed and raise as much money as I can for Cornwall Hospice Care to continue their amazing work.

Oh and one other thing, I am covering the costs of the trip completely so all donations will go to the Cornwall Hospice Care.
