Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page and many thanks to everyone who has supported me so far.

My finish time at the Virgin London Marathon on 25 April was 4 hours 15 minutes 44 seconds! It was a fantastic day with terrific support from the crowds. Here's to next year!

This has been a splendid opportunity to raise money for a really worthwhile local charity, The Pelican Cancer Foundation. I have visited the team at The Ark in , and you could not meet a more dedicated and hardworking group of people.

Imagine a treatment for cancer in the pelvic region that not only improves the chances of surviving cancer but enables patients to enjoy a better quality of life too. This is what the Pelican Cancer Foundation has achieved and it is now busy sharing its knowledge and skills with other cancer specialists throughout the , and the rest of the world

‘Surgery cures more cancer patients than any other intervention’ Prof. R J (Bill) Heald OBE

Pelican Cancer Foundation continues to make a big difference in the fight against bowel, liver and urological cancers, improving the survival and quality of life for patients. We take our name from the words Pelvic and Liver Cancer.

Our aim is to improve precision surgery. We develop the skills of clinical cancer teams by providing ground-breaking courses on the latest life saving operating techniques. These courses provide a venue for surgeons to share expertise and so provide their cancer patients with the best chance of survival. The majority of bowel cancer patients can often be cured through early surgical intervention.

We commission research projects that are looking for ways to improve surgery for cancer patients. Our research has already led to changes in practice that benefits today’s cancer patients.

A former bowel cancer patient (pictured with his family above) says 'the surgery I had saved my life. After the treatment, we went on to have our youngest son. The only legacy we have of the cancer is an impressive scar on my stomach. All thanks to Pelican.'
