Story

A valued colleague and friend of ours, Barclay Webster, was diagnosed with a rare sinus cancer in July last year.  Following his diagnosis he has undergone chemotherapy (in Edinburgh), surgery (in Glasgow) and radiotherapy (in Clatterbridge, in the Wirral) and will undergo further surgery.

Barclay is now recovering from his treatment at home in Edinburgh.  He is gradually getting his strength and energy back and hopes to return to work soon.

So, although the triathlon has come a bit too soon for Barclay, we decided to get teams together from across the country at Deloitte to compete at the London Triathlon and raise money for charities who have supported Barclay along the way.

The Teams

There are four of us competing in the team event.

Simon, Kirstie and Steph will compete as a complete team.  Training is going well, but it's all rather daunting as none of the team have competed in Triathlon before.

Tony is also competing in a team, with two other partners from DTRB in other offices.  Tony tells us that he regularly competes in triathlons/other sporting events and so is well equipped to deal with this event.  However, we fully suspect that another excuse will be produced from thin air as and when the results are in as to why it wasn't as good a time as it should have been (most obvious for this event will be blaming his team mates.....maybe we will start a book!)

Mark Cliff, who finds it appropriate to wander around the office in his luminous cycling outfits, is competing on his own.

David Brown, from our Leeds office, is also competing as an individual entry.  This is his first full triathlon and is training hard for the event.

Monica Fiumara, from our London Campus, is also competing as an individual entry.  Monica has been training hard, including a 2.2mile open water swim in the Thames.

William Lau, from NEST Corporation, is also competing and raising funds, having worked with Barclay during his secondment at NEST, where Barclay made a number of good friends.

About the Charity

We're raising money for ‘Clatterbridge your cancer centre’ is the only charity that raises funds for Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology, the leading cancer treatment facility for people in Merseyside, Cheshire and Lancashire. Every year more than 7,000 new patients are diagnosed with cancer and referred to their doctors for treatment.

The money raised allows them to provide many of the ‘extras’ over and above what the NHS would be expected to supply, extras that make such an important difference to patient’s experience. They are passionate about what they do and are committed to helping our patients and their families wherever we can. Through their radiotherapy and chemotherapy services, together with supportive care from nursing and health professionals, they improve the lives of people affected by cancer and provide support for their families.

So please dig deep and sponsor us!  Any amount is gratefully received; we really do appreciate it.
