We raise life-changing funds to enhance care at UHS

Story

On October 24 2013 my father-in-law Terry Hosey fell from a ladder in his garage, hit his head on the concrete floor and suffered a serious head injury.  He was taken to Southampton General Hospital where he was put into an induced coma and then taken to the Neurological Intensive Care Unit.  Terry’s condition was extremely critical and we were told the outcome would probably not be good.

He remained in a coma for over three weeks under the wonderful care of the doctors and nurses in the Neurological Intensive Care. During this time he needed numerous brain scans to monitor the swelling of his brain and any build up of fluid.  Every time this needed to be done all of his life support equipment would have to be changed over to a mobile unit and he had to be wheeled on his bed through the corridors of the hospital accompanied by three medical staff.

Amazingly Terry came round from his coma and after 4 months in hospital has come home to his family.  Although a full recovery is going to be a long process he is very close to his old self and we are obviously very proud of his progress.

We can never say thank you enough to the incredible doctors and nurses who looked after him.  The Intensive Care staff, saved his life and were so kind and caring not only to Terry but also to us, his family, who were obviously devastated seeing our loved one going through this.

As a way of saying thank you, myself, Terry’s son Simon and a group of friends are taking on the 3 Peaks Challenge to try and raise some money towards the ‘Percy’s Pals’appeal who aim to raise £250,000 to buy a mobile scanner for the Intensive Care Unit to make it easier for brain scans to be done on the unit which will obviously be a massive help to caring for people in such life threatening situations such as Terry’s was.

Terry has climbed many ladders if his lifetime and just a tiny slip changed his life forever.  Without the amazing care of the Intensive Care Unit staff he wouldn’t be with us today.
