My good friend's fiancé was diagnosed
with breast cancer. Fortunately they were able to catch it before it became
terminal. Although she has since recovered, she still needs to have regular
checks for the next Five years.
Unfortunately we all probably know of
somebody or have family members who have been diagnosed with a particular
cancer. When something like this hits home you realise how precious life is.
To acknowledge the incredible work of
the medical staff, I've decided to support Breast Cancer by entering the Cuba
Cycle Challenge between 14th - 22nd March 2010.
My personal target is £3500.00 as my
friends at Gallagher Construction have pledged a donation of an extra £1500.00
if the target is reached! - It’s amazing what a couple of pints in the pub can
do...
Cuba is the Caribbean's largest
and least commercialised island and one of the world's last bastions of
communism. We spend 5 days cycling along quiet roads passing towns and
villages which seem frozen in time. There is barely any traffic, just a
few horse and carts and tractors.
Highlights of the ride include the Bay
of Pigs, famous for US aggression on Cuba in 1961; Trinidad, a UNESCO World
Heritage Site; the Sierra del Escambray mountains; Santa Clara with its statue
of the legendary Che Guevara and the captivating city of Havana which boasts
spacious plazas and glorious Spanish architecture.
This event will be tougher than my
previous challenges as most of the days will be spent on dirt trails rather
than nice smooth roads...ouch!!
Here's the itinerary:

Zapata Peninsula National Park and small country villages. 45km.DAY
