October the 17th- I will be winning the Amsterdam marathon....

With less than two weeks to go, I'm halfway to the £750 target for the Hue Help charity www.huehelp.org. Every year 11,665 children drown in Vietnam. Of these children only 6% could swim. The Hue Help fund the Swimming for Safety programme to reduce this shocking statistic. £750 will pay for the programme in a high-flood risk area for a year. Prevention is always better than the cure, and if I am able to raise this amount it will save lives.

The swimming project currently runs in Hue, involving 6 orphanages and 150 children, teaching them how to swim and basic water safety. In 2011 it is expected to cost £795, £435 on tuition, £260 on equipment, and £100 on the running of activities and competitions for all the orphanages.Over the next few years we are also extending our swimming project into the more remote areas of Thua Thien Hue Province, where the drowning rate is much higher than in the cities. This will be a project that lasts 3 years and aims to reach 1200 children in the Phu Loc, Quang Dien and Houng Tra Districts, again teaching swimming and water safety.

My niece, in Vietnam, has just started having swimming lessons. She is one of the lucky 6% who's parents can afford  and have access to lessons. Help other children, like my niece Tra My, and get Vietnamese children swimming!
