Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

For the University of Chester’s 175th Anniversary, and to raise money for charity, Bill Stothart and I are going to do the longest, fastest zip line in the world, Zip World Velocity at Bethesda, on Sunday 28 September 2014. It is over a mile long and we’re promised to get up to 100mph above Penrhyn Quarry.

We both work at the University of Chester which was originally founded as Chester College in 1839, so the Academic Year 2014/15 is the 175th Anniversary. To celebrate there are numerous activities being organised, and staff and students are being encouraged to fund raise for charity. We have chosen to do something to get the heart rate up a bit!

I am supporting Families United Warrington. This local charity supports children with disabilities and their families. 'F.UN Kidz on the Move' programme provides monthly events, Saturday F.UN Club, challenging activities such as skiing/snowplay, ice-skating, bowling, climbing walls, parent support groups; counselling and complimentary therapies. Peter is delighted to be supporting this small local charity, which provides a much needed outlet for children with disabilities, as well as giving them the opportunity to spend quality fun time with their families.

Bill is supporting Cancer Research UK which is the world’s leading cancer charity dedicated to saving lives through research.

The charity is important to Bill because, like a lot of people, cancer has affected many in his family, including his sister, mother, aunt and cousin who all lost their lives to the disease, as well as others who have survived.

In the 1970s, just a quarter of people survived for 10 years or more following a diagnosis of cancer. Today, thanks to research, that has increased to half, so survival rates have been doubled in 40 years. Cancer Research UK want to accelerate that progress and see three-quarters of patients surviving cancer within the next 20 years.
