Story
Following the successful completion of my first half marathon in 2009, I am running the Royal Parks Half Marathon this year in aid of the Wandsworth Bereavement Service (WBS).
WBS provides one-to-one bereavement counselling for residents of the Borough of Wandsworth. This service is usually provided free of charge and the counsellors are trained volunteers who have suffered a loss themselves. Those who make use of the service will be matched with a counsellor who has been in the same situation as the client, because it really does make a difference when someone has “been there”.
I used the service provided by WBS at the beginning of this year after I got stuck in the way I was thinking following Paul’s death. I wasn’t sure that it would help but was prepared to try it. My counsellor was very welcoming and she really did get it; I was surprised by the difference this made in the way I related to her and the things we spoke about.
While I hope no-one else has a need for services like these, the reality is they are required everyday by people in all walks of life. By reaching my fundraising target I will be helping to train another counsellor, who will in turn help someone with their grief.
