Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Hopefully you are visiting my site as you are one of my wonderful patients / friends/ family who know that at the end of June 2010 I am leaving the Woolton Hill/ Kintbury surgery to work for Voluntary service overseas ( VSO). Or you may well be one of the many people that James has helped over the years through the Waterside Series of Canoe Races.

I have had just over 12 years of meeting wonderful people in this lovely area just outside of Newbury. Many of you are sad that I am leaving but also understand that I am going to do something that I feel is very worthwhile.

It's now March and at last I have received details of my placement.....

I have been invited to go and work in Kakamega in Western Kenya working for WEAEP ( Western Education Advocacy and Empowerment Programme). I shall be working with very deprived women and children who have no access to health care currently. The plan will be to set up a health clinic with Paediatric facilities to start with. This will then take on HIV/AIDS work , family planning and antenatal/ postnatal care.

I am also setting up a website which as long as I have reliable internet connections whilst I am away will update everybody in the UK as to what I am doing....... ursula-in-africa.com

But, I still need to raise money for VSO.... it costs between £17-29000 to send each volunteer with VSO abroad and even though I am giving up a reliable situation here we are all asked to raise £900 for future volunteers. Any money over £900 is always appreciated!

So as usual I am not doing it the easy way but have in my sights the Reading Half Marathon on March 21st and the Blenhein Triathlon on June 6th....

Please support me in my training and fund raising and thank you again!

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

So please dig deep and donate now.

End of March now

In 14 weeks time I fly out to Kenya...

I managed to run the Reading Half Marathon last weekend in a time of 2:00:31.. I really wanted to beat the 2 hour limit but someone took me out at 9.5 miles, damaging my already sore left hip. However, I managed to get there....

I've just updated my total and have to say thanks to everybody for sponsoring me so far. I have now reached a grand total of £1615.....Thank you

Also a huge thanks to Newbury Canoe Club who donated £200 to our fundraising efforts. We hope you guys and all the other paddlers do well next year and especial thoughts with those of you doing the Devizes to Westminster canoe race over Easter!!!!

About the charity

VSO is an international development organisation that brings people together to share skills, build capabilities, and change lives to make the world a fairer place for all. Everyday, VSO volunteers are working to empower people living in some of the world’s most marginalised communities.
