Hello, both my son and I have tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC).
TSC is a genetic condition that can lead to growths in various organs of the body, but those most commonly affected are the brain, eyes, heart, kidney, skin and lungs.

Taking on the 2024 London Marathon was a huge challenge that I never dreamed I would be capable of after I was fully confined to crutches in 2015 for about 2 years. During this time I used leg-lifters and a special aid to help put my socks on as my mobility was so poor. Hope for recovery seemed slim - I had been diagnosed with acquired brain injury, as far back as 2002. Lifelong epilepsy, and now worsening mobility left me tired and unable to complete basic exercise.

But thankfully, with lots of low-level specialist physio, love from my family and some support from the TSA which resulted in me entering a drug trial, I began to regain most of my mobility by the beginning of 2019. The seizures unfortunately persist with some regularity (and this also hampered my preparation).

The Tuberous Sclerosis Association (TSA) is the only UK charity dedicated to supporting people affected by Tuberous Sclerosis Complex.

The charity has supported me over a number of years and this fundraiser is my chance to give a little something back. 

Examples of the important work the charity carries out: raises awareness in educational and clinical settings; research and development into treatments to help those with the condition; provides support for families of those with a diagnosis; hosts in-person and virtual social events; publishes a regular magazine.

This thread includes updates of my training progress and the outcome of my marathon attempt. Suffice to say I was never in danger of breaking records. But it's been a fulfilling experience :)  Thank you for reading.
