I only recently became aware of Motor Neurone Disease through a friend whose family are currently experiencing this dreadful condition at first hand. I can only imagine what they are going through in having to deal with this on a daily basis. For this reason I have signed up to the 'Walk to d'feet MND Jon Prestwich fundraising event' which will take place in October later this year to raise some funds and much needed awareness for the MND Association.

For this event we will be hiking the Cleveland Way some 110 miles. Generally it is recommended you complete this in a leisurely 7 days, however for our trek we will be aiming for five or six days, which means for most we will be walking close to 20 miles per day then sleeping in youth hostels and the odd barn along the way.

The Motor Neurone Disease Association are a leader in the funding and promotion of cutting-edge MND research both within the UK and across the globe. They aim to ensure everyone affected by MND receives the best possible care and support. Every donation makes a difference to a person living with MND. Here are just a few examples of how your fundraising could help:

£15 buys an adapted cutlery set. For someone with MND it’s more than just a cutlery set, it’s the dignity of being able to feed yourself.

£50 funds laboratory equipment for a day’s vital research into finding out the causes of MND.

£150 operates the MND Connect support and information line for half a day – having someone to talk to really can make a world of difference.

£500 funds the installation of a stair lift – anything that can extend independence and allow someone to stay in their own home is so important.

£1,000 buys a riser recliner armchair to help maintain a level of mobility for those who can no longer stand unaided.

£3,000 funds an MND expert researcher for one month and keeps the hope of a cure alive. We ensure that every pound we receive is spent carefully so that people affected by MND get the help they need both now and in the future.

Make no mistake, this will be a real challenge, made even harder as a little while ago I was diagnosed with AS (Ankylosing Spondylitis) a condition where the body's immune system is wrongly triggered to attack your own body, causing pain, stiffness and damage to joints. This manifests itself in pain in my back, knees and hips usually at night or after impact exercises. So for me this is going to be a real push to manage these symptoms on the way round and that's not including the blisters and dreaded chafing! ;)

I would be delighted then if you could perhaps help me kindly raise both awareness and a little money for the MND Association whilst also providing my friend with the feeling that some good has come out of what has been and continues to be a very difficult time.

Thank you for your support

Training Ahoy!
