On New years day - I received a phone call from an old friend. He is one of my oldest friends in Africa – we lived together for nearly a year and worked together for the best part of 8. Now due to having HIV his health is such that he is unable to continue working. So since I last saw him, his needs have drastically increased while my means have significantly reduced (due to having another child and living in UK).
As an HIV sufferer he knows he does not have long to live. In my last meetings with him I feared his HIV was turning into AIDS as I watched him contract more and more illnesses (cold’s, flu’s etc) and struggle to shake them off. In one of my last conversations with him he said to me – 'I have had my life now - I only want to do all I can so my children can live the best life they can.’
He phoned me on NY’s day and things are clearly getting bad. His has three daughters (he calls his blessings) and there is no such thing as a free education in the city he lives. Feeding, clothing and educating them is a major drain.
As I was wondering about how to respond I also read a book by Jonathan Aitkin who went from cabinet minister to bankrupt prisoner. One of his friends set-up and raised money for ‘The Aitkins children trust’ and raised £600,000. Enough to send his children through uni and Eton and various other needs. It struck me, that while I have far less rich friends - I ought to at least do the same. So I invite you to join with me to help my friend
