We safe and decent homes for families to build new lives, hopes and opportunities

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Dear all In November of this year I shall be travelling to Nepal and volunteering on the Global village program for a 2 week period with Habitat for humanity.

Habitat for Humanity International is a non-profit organization that seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world and make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action worldwide.

The need for decent housing around the world is staggering. An estimated 2.6 billion people or two thirds of the population have no access to adequate sanitation in their homes.

The purpose of my trip will be to physically build a home alongside the local community, I will not only be providing essential labour but i will also help to lift spirits of the locals and provide motivation.

The typical cost of building a house in the developing world is just £1235 hence my target for the trip.

My typical day will begin at 08.00. The work will commence and continue until lunchtime. After lunch I shall resume working until early afternoon. My duties will include mixing mortar, building walls, laying blocks, installing doors and windows and putting up roofs. Oh I nearly forgot I shall be working with an experienced habitat builder...we want to make sure the house stays up right ;)

My accommodation for the fortnight will be a sleeping bag on a school floor. Additionally my nutrition will be simple and basic local food.

So please dig deep and donate now!!! I shall keep you all updated and even post pictures of my build, accommodation and cuisine as soon as i get back.

Travel dates 11/11/10 - 26/11/10

About the charity

We believe decent homes are the heartbeat of strong communities and so we also fight for land rights for women, upgrade urban slums and informal settlements, improve access to water and sanitation, and help communities become more resilient in the face of natural disasters.
