Story
Cambodia, not the first place you may think that a world recession will hit. But for thousands of women, the garment factories of PnomPenh were a source of income and a refuge from the streets. Last year, 70 factories closed due to the recession and these women are facing destitution or resorting to prostitution and all the dangers that entails just to survive.
Tearfund, working through local partners, can offer these women another way, including training to run their own businesses, help with schooling for their children, and small loans.
As many of you know, I visited Cambodia in 2007, and the land has a special place in my heart. I want to try to support Tearfund in this latest appeal to reach out to those affected so dreadfully by the recession.
I don't run (doctor's orders - yes really!), so I am planning to swim 10km over a period of 5 days, from Monday 24 to Friday 28 May 2010, and would like to invite you to 'be part of a miracle' as Tearfund says, by sponsoring me to complete the challenge! I can assure you that even a small amount of money can go a long way in a land where many survive on $1 per day.
So please do think of giving to this good cause, and feel free to write encouraging messages too! Thank you, on behalf of the vulnerable women and children of Pnom Penh, for believing that you can be part of the miracle.
