We manage Wimbledon and Putney Commons to preserve it as a natural open space

Story

As many of you know, I ride at Wimbledon Village Stables, which organises the longest running, most successful sponsored horse ride in the country and, since the first ride in 1975, we have raised over £1 million.

This is an opportunity for me and my horse to wear fancy dress and parade down Wimbledon Village High Street, followed by a ten mile ride around the beautiful woodland of Wimbledon Common and scenic open spaces of Richmond Park.

The object is to raise money for charity, and this year we are raising money for the Wimbledon and Putney Commons Conservators. The Conservators are responsible for the protection and preservation of Wimbledon Common, Putney Heath and Putney Lower Common. Much of the Commons are a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation.  With woodland, scrubland, heathland, mown recreation areas and nine ponds, they are  home to a wide variety of bird, animal and plant life and require careful conservation.

The charity has many demands on its resources and, as the equestrian facilities require extensive maintenance and improvement, it falls to us as riders to raise the funds to do this, to safeguard the Commons that we love so much both for our own enjoyment and for the benefit of future generations of horses and riders.
