Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Through my work in Rwanda I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to provide hands on assistance with the amazing work of BirthLink in the support they provide to vulnerable mothers and babies. I now hope to continue my support through fundraising to aid it's ongoing work in Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Any parent hopes that if their baby is born sick or premature they will be able to do whatever possible to give their baby the best chance of survival. Often all that is required is warmth and nutrition, but newborn babies in Rwanda and the DRC die simply because of a lack of these basic needs. Countless deaths are easily preventable, even in the most resource constrained situations, with the correct education and support. BirthLink has focused on providing education and simple resources to local nurses and doctors, in particular about breastfeeding and temperature control, so they can assist parents in the care of these vulnerable babies. Further information about this charity's amazing work can be found on their website and Facebook page.
Facts: Each year 2.9 million babies die in the first month of life. Only 1% are in high income countries. Two thirds of neonatal mortality is reported from 12 countries six of which are in sub-Saharan Africa (including the DRC).
My first running challenge is to acquire a PB in my new home town of Exeter on it's hilly half marathon route, then continue my training through the winter months to finally achieve my ambition of completing a marathon in the spring. I will be running the Paris marathon on 12th April 2015.
I would really appreciate your support in my fundraising for this fabulous charity and worthwhile cause, and thank you for taking the time to read my page.
