Edinborough 10k run · 2 May 2010

At times of overseas emergency, the DEC brings together a unique alliance of the UK's aid, corporate, public and broadcasting sectors to rally the nation's compassion, and ensure that funds raised go to DEC agencies best placed to deliver effective and timely relief to people most in need.

Story

I have been considering which charities I want to support by getting sponsored for this run, however, without feeling a particular affinity to one or another I have ummed and arhed about who I want to help. Then the devistation happened in Haiti, i work with rum, i read about rum and i drink rum i am also aware of its social and economic implications to small island comunities. The thought that one of the worlds most unstable economies, which has suffered for centuries for one reason or another, should be suffereing again seems so unfair.

The recent events in Haiti are really close to my heart, having read and invested so much of my time reading about the carribean, I feel terrible about one of the poorest countries in the world being sticken with such a terribly devastating natural disaster. So what I would like to do is e-mail all of my colleagues, friends and family to ask them to donate money NOW rather than me saving all the way until May and handing the money over then on the web relief address of www.dec.org.uk/donate_now/ or by calling 0370 6060900 so all funds go STRAIGHT to Disasters Emergency Comittees Haiti appeal and help the poor people who are suffering so badly. I know it's unusual, but it's better for the people we are supporting in the end.

I think this quote from Tuesday Jan 19th Metro sums up why it is important to all of us:

“Amid fractious exchanges in the capital last night, gangs of youths were seen battling with broken bottles, machetes and razors over rum supplies.” – Aiden Radnedge

I have also set up this just giving site incase people have trouble supporting the appeal, or if you really want to make sure i finish the run ( I will) before you dontate. Please if you want to support me, dontate straight to the relief appeal now as this is when people need it most.
