On Sunday May 16, a team from the First Actuarial office in attempted the BUPA Great Manchester Run.  For some of us, this was the first run we’ve ever attempted, let alone 10km, and we’re happy (and lucky!) just to have got round with limbs intact and into the pub before closing time!

In preparation some were more slightly more determined and competitive than others and some looking to improve on last year’s time. So well done to Andy on his unofficial time of 59:23 minutes which appears to be an improvement of 6 minutes from last year. It’s unofficial because he apparently lost his timing chip and recorded his own time, so made it up. Although he claims it’s because Uche stopped his Wednesday Bacon Butty and Friday Ribs of Fire club leading up to the race this year. Rob promised to pay an extra pound for every minute under the hour mark so we expect him to come up with an actuarial reduction factor for Andy’s nearly efforts.

Catherine and Emma’s hard work in training also paid off as they achieved excellent times of 1.03:32 and 1:03.55 respectively with Emma beating Stephen by 4 minutes who incidentally improved his time from last year by 29 seconds. So a big well done. 

Phil claims he has run a 10Km race in 50mins 4 years ago but could only manage 1:13:07 this year. He apparently slowed down to marvel sights along the route which included Old Trafford, The Imperial War Museum, KFC and the also the Audi garage. Phil has also convinced himself he can manage a sub 47 minute time next year and Andy Screen has agreed to sponsor him £50 for achieving this and a pound for every second quicker.

Hilary, managed a time of 1:21:42 which makes her officially the fastest Hilary Salt in !

At the end, the bragging office rights fell to our compadre and first time runner, the Speedy Gonzalez – Gary Potts with a impressive time of 49:42! Well done to him, enjoy it whilst you can because I’m sure Rob will want to take part next year. 

The ringers Dave, Graham, Joe and Alan all managed impressive sub 50 times with the exception of Wes who went backwards from last years time of 59:39 due to his extensive training regime in and around the restaurants of Hertfordshire.   

There was one no starter in Qamar, who twisted his knee a week earlier and gutted he did not recover in time but managed to defer his entry and will definitely be competing next year.
