Story

We did it!  Garth in 3:44:01  Juliet just broke 4 hours with 3:59:32.

HUGE THANKS for all your support & encouragement; especially to Juliet's parents Hugh & Rosemary for entertaining the children during marathon weekend!

Read on for (a little) more about the marathon ...

Race day mirrored our different approaches to training and was great hare and tortoise stuff.  Garth eschewed received marathon wisdom concerning the need to preserve energy for the last 6 miles and shot off like the wind, finishing the first half of the race in 1:40.  Meanwhile Juliet dutifully followed Bruce the sub-4 pacemaker carrying his green balloons maintaining a steady stroll through the streets of Brooklyn taking a more leisurely 2 hours to complete 13.1 miles.

Around the 21 mile point Garth's legs started to prove those training manuals (that he hadn't read) were right after all as his pace started to slow.  Juliet cruised consistently along with green balloons to finish just, and only just, inside 4 hours, 15 minutes behind Garth.

A very special and courageous boy from RGS Guildford called Akio Sellek died in 2009 aged 16 and spent his last weeks at Great Ormond Street.  In 2010 Akio's mother ran the London Marathon in a caterpillar costume with two RGS colleagues and has raised nearly £40,000 for GOSH.  We hope to add to this total with your donations.    If you would prefer to do a CAF, or equivalent, cheque please just make it out to Great Ormond Street Hospital and send it to our home address (53 Lancaster Ave, Guildford GU1 3JR) and we will pass it on to GOSH and add it to the running total as an offline donation.
