Story
Why would I want to put myself through the ordeal of running the London Marathon 2014? I can manage a couple of laps of the Chigwell School fields, but 26.2 miles across the Capital is something completely different. However, despite the challenge, it will enable me to do something important, which is to raise money for cancer research.
As with many families, sadly, my family has fallen victim to cancer. 15 years ago, at a young age, my father lost his battle with cancer but a month before he died I completed the London Marathon, raising funds for cancer research and raising his spirits in the process. That was then, in 2014 at a more advanced age but with less advanced fitness, I will be running the Marathon for the second time – in part to remember Dad but mainly to do something positive to help fight cancer.
In the Chigwell community a number of pupils, close friends and colleagues have experienced cancer and I wanted to do my bit to ensure that one day, others will not have to suffer as they have. I am running for Cancer Research UK and hope to raise as much as I can.”
Gary Bansor, Sports Team at Cancer Research UK said “It’s fantastic that Gill is making such a huge effort to fundraise toward our life-saving research. Our research to beat cancer is entirely funded by the public, and it is thanks to supporters like Gill that our ground-breaking work has seen survival rates double in the last 40 years.
Whilst we have made huge improvements there is still so much more to do. More than 1 in 3 of us will develop cancer, and with our ageing population this statistic is getting worse.
Gill has taken the inspirational decision to run in the 2014 Virgin Money London Marathon, and to fundraise for our cause. Please support Gill’s efforts by sponsoring her today, and help bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.”
