My story

As some of you were aware my wife (Jo) and I have been expecting our first child. Labour started the evening of Tuesday 8th November but our little princess didn’t arrive until early Friday morning, 7lb 14oz much bigger than we had ever expected! An incredible experience we will never forget even if she did take 3 days to arrive! At 00.13 on Friday 11.11.2011 a little family was formed, Grace Charlotte Hunt had arrived.

Unfortunately although she came out looking so perfect it was soon apparent all was not well, a complication with her heart (transverse of the greater arteries) meant oxygen was not circulating through her body. She was rushed from East Surrey Hospital to the Royal Brompton London in the early hours, sirens going all the way. Everyone worked so hard to save her but her little body decided she could take no more and she passed away in our arms at 13:30 that same day.

It goes without saying we were in absolute shock, this was not how we ever thought it would be. In saying that, the hours we did get with her were something that we will never forget and would happily repeat, just to share that short time again.

Your support has been amazing, peoples kind words and thoughts make us cry but make us happy at the same time. Through the realms of social networking her little life has already touched so many. She’s already known in Australia through friends and family and India through Ben's work!

Lots of people had asked if there’s anything they can do, to start with we could not think of anything however after a little while Ben had two thoughts. Firstly donating to the Royal Brompton would be amazing, they did so much to give Grace the best chance and continue to work with other poorly children.

Secondly Ben thought it would be really nice if Graces passing triggers some positive events, patching up an argument with a friend, solving that family problem, contacting that person you have been putting off etc. It would be lovely to know that our little girl gave you that little push that brought people back together.

Emotions are a little raw at the moment but we look to seek every positive we can, that approach seems to be working well so far. She was a little beauty and we feel lucky and proud to have just a few hours with her.

We would love to use this opportunity to thank everyone at both Hospitals. The staff worked tirelessly to treat her and with her strength and their hard work a little life that should of lasted minutes lasted 13 hours and 17 minutes.

To those expecting a child we can imagine you might start to worry, we know we would, from what we know this condition is rare so please don’t worry any more than you have been. Having that experience was something I will never forgot, would recommend (where possible) and would repeat in a second to see her again for those few hours.

As we said please look for the positives in our situation, her short life is already having an impact bigger than we could ever have imagined.

Our hearts ache for losing her but we smile when we think of her. We know any donations would be greatly appreciated…

Thanks Ben and Jo Hunt (Proud parents of Grace Charlotte Hunt)
