We support people living with brain injury to give them the best quality of life

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

As those of you who know me running and exercise have not really been my thing in recent years. Like most us us there's not the time, but to be more truthful, the inclination. But last year something happened to friends of mine that made me look at life very differently.

On Monday 20th July 2009 an old friend of mine Diane Black suffered a near fatal brain haemorrhage. Initially only given 48 hours to live Diane survived but in a vegetative state. On 4th November a nurse at Mayday hospital noticed a twitch in Diane's right thumb. Very slow progress continued from this point and on 10th February Diane was transferred to the Royal Hospital fo Neuro-disability in Putney. Unfortunately this transfer coincided with Diane's second epileptic seizure plus an unrelated 4 hour brain operation to relieve fluid pressure. Yet again Diane came through these setbacks and today is completely aware of who and where she is. She has developed limited speech and will respond to any question always in context although her voice remains little more than a whisper. Amazingly given her condition she can also now laughand again, this is always in context. In addition she has a limited range of controlled movement in both hands and can manage some gestures (not always pleasant!!). Finally in recent weeks she has begun to develop a modest amount of movement in her legs. She has now managed several short trips home (with her husband Ian driving the ambulance!).

All this improvement (and it continues each day) is down to the dedication and ability of the wonderful staff at the RHN. Given the heart-warming background to this story I would encourage each and every one of you to give as generously as you can.
