One fine day a few years ago, whilst taking a rest from Kayaking on Lake Bassenthwaite, I watched a group from the Calvert  Trust as they disembarked. Their happy faces as they enjoyed the wonderful experience of being on the water touched me deeply, so I decided to try to get involved with the trust and the great work they do to make the beauty of the outdoors accessible to all.

I have been open water swimming for a couple of years and am fortunate enough to have a number of crazy friends  (of a certain age) with a common love of tennis and enjoying life, who formed a group under the name of  "the Lytham Dippers". We meet at high tide at the beach in Blackpool and "dip", have a picnic and laugh!

They have agreed to join me in our challenge "30 bays in 80 days" to enjoy the experience of wild swimming ( or dipping) in the beautiful Lake District. We plan to have lovely days out whilst raising money and the profile of this amazing charity.

About the charity

The Lake District Calvert Trust provides residential outdoor activity courses for people of all ages with physical, sensory, learning, behavioural and/or mental disabilities. Its mission is to challenge disability through outdoor adventure. Pioneering equipment adaptations, and intensive, instructor-led activity programmes (that include climbing, abseiling, canoeing, sailing, horse/trap driving, archery, orienteering and paragliding), provide an environment whose aims are to teach, challenge, motivate, engender confidence in ability, promote independence, and foster integration. All instructors are highly trained and specialist qualified, and the facilities are specially adapted and fully accessible to all. The Lake District Calvert Trust provides a unique and life-changing experience for those with disabilities, who are encouraged to believe that it’s what you CAN do that counts.
