We rescue and rehome pets in the UK to give homeless pets a better life

Story

On Saturday, 11 December, most of Heydon Harriers finally completed the Santa Run around the Pembroke Sportsfield (thanks to Trevor for measuring the course and for enabling us to carry out the run after the disappointment of last weekend).  Ken and Ann are running today, 12 December in Bar Hill.  The weather could not have been better and we walked, jogged, or (in the case of Trevor and Andrew who joined us to give moral support) ran round the course.  Thanks to Sharon, Fran and Ozzie for supervising our laps of the course.   The run was great fun and a lovely way to raise money - but we couldn't have done it without you.  Thank you so much for all your contributions, by the time all pledges have been received, we believe that we will have raised around £2,000 and we'll keep updating this site as the funds grow.  We hope very much to be able to gather the funds before Christmas so that Heydon can purchase a new perspex, weather-proof screen to protect the cats and kittens in their new shelter during this winter.  Thank you all so much - love from PURRS and Heydon Harriers

                               ------ STOP PRESS -------

Some of you probably know that the Santa Run in Greenwich Park was cancelled at the last minute last weekend.  However, we still all want very much to raise the money Wood Green Heydon needs so much and will be running on Saturday, 11 December in Cambridge instead.  We have ordered santa suits and will put pictures on this site after the event.  Only the date and venue have changed and we have even gained an additional runner!   To ensure that we complete the run Wood Green are kindly sending someone down to oversee the event and sign our sponsor forms.  If anyone would prefer that, under the circumstances, their money be refunded or sponsorship pledge be cancelled please would they let me or the runner they have sponsored know by Friday 10 December.   Thanks, Sue

Heydon Harriers is a group of individuals who are passionate about animal welfare and want to help Wood Green’s Heydon Shelter succeed in their latest appeal.

PURRS – (Pembroke Ultimate Road Running Santas) is a group of Pembroke College staff who have joined together to raise money as a group.  We are prepared to suffer blisters and the challenge of running in long white beards and red hats for Heydon and we promise to put up pictures after the event in return for donations!!!

Most of us don't run (indeed, getting out of bed is quite an effort for some of us), and we are far from being fitness fanatics, but improving animal welfare is one cause that we feel is worth dressing up in a santa suit and running/walking 5km for.  The Santa Run 2010 takes place in Greenwich Park on 5 December and more than 2,000 santas are expected to take part.

Wood Green Animal Shelters, http://www.woodgreen.org.uk/, rely on public donations (no Government or Lottery funds at all) and do a brilliant job often under difficult circumstances.

Last year, WGAS rehomed 5,500 animals.  Animals are often rescued in unpleasant and difficult circumstances.  Several of us have adopted cats, dogs and guinea pigs from Heydon (and Wood Green at Godmanchester) and want to raise runds for Heydon near Cambridge.

The Heydon shelter is raising money so that they can adopt the latest animal welfare techniques and they need to have a lot of building work done to make this possible.  The Heydon Shelter opened in 1954 and many of the enclosures have "reached the point of no return" and need to be replaced.  The plan is to build a modern, comfortable rehoming facility with a total of 51 individual cat houses.  A separate isolation facility has also been included in the plans.  Shy, nervous cats will feel increasingly secure and will have a better chance of finding a home more quickly.  Infectious diseases will be more easily contained and treated also.  This project has been underway since the start of 2010 and funding is urgently needed to complete the work.

Last year, WGAS’ three shelters performed 22,000 medical checks and hundreds of major operations.  The Heydon surgery is cramped and urgently needs to upgrade emergency and in-patient facilities and equipment in order to continue to provide the best possible care.
