Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit my page.

I am aiming to run the London Marathon in April 2010 for Joint Action.  They are The Orthopaedic Research Appeal of the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA).

The BOA were founded in 1918, their ‘mission is to bring relief to people suffering from injury or musculoskeletal disorder by advancing the science, art and practice of orthopaedic surgery’.

For anyone who is unsure what orthopaedic surgery is it is the medical specialty concerned with correction of deformities or functional impairments of the skeletal system.  They use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumours, and congenital conditions.  I know this may sound like medical jargon and I am very sorry, but many people just like you could find yourself suffering from these problems.

There are examples of what the surgeons do with screws to repair various parts of body in my photos.

Today, adults, children - people just like you - are benefitting and will benefit from the efforts of orthopaedic surgeons.

1 in 2 of us will need treatment at some point during our lifetime. Young fit people are frequently injured in sport or road traffic accidents. Also, one of the common needs in the over 60s’ age group is for an artificial hip.  My maternal grandmother has had both her hip joints replaced and my paternal grandfather has had one of his replaced.  Both have benefited immensely from the pain relief this surgery has given them.

My parents are involved in the orthopaedic industry, they have run their own company for many years, supplying fracture fixation products to hospitals throughout the UK.  This has given me some understanding of what orthopaedic surgeons do.  Running the London Marathon is something I personally really want to achieve and to do it for a cause which is close to me and my family makes it all more satisfying.

I would really appreciate all the help given to raise money for Joint Action, no matter how small the donation.

Thank you
