The Taylor family have experienced first hand the level of care, compassion and understanding given by the entire team at The Queen’s Centre, at Castle Hill Hospital near Hull.

After weeks of Freddie (24) feeling very poorly, being misdiagnosed three times by the GP practices, Chris’ grandson deteriorated further, having been prescribed strong pain killers and physio, with his symptoms not being investigated.  We eventually ignored advice from 111 and took him to A&E, on the 2nd September.

He was fast-tracked through blood tests, transferred by ambulance and admitted immediately onto Ward 33 in The Queen’s Centre

It became apparent that Freddie’s condition was extremely serious and invasive tests were taken over a few days before being diagnosed with a rare fast-spreading blood cancer.  Burkitts Lymphoma is both leukaemia and lymphoma, and the consultants had to act very quickly, leaving little time to discuss the detail fully.

The Queen’s Centre has been our home for the last three months whilst Freddie has undertaken an aggressive chemo plan. We have had the benefit of privacy and an extra bed in his room, with double orders for meals and drinks. Nothing has been too much trouble.

The family has been overwhelmed with the level of care,  and the facilities, and Freddie has made some wonderful new friends during this part of his journey. The consultants and doctors, to the nurses, cleaners and catering staff, have been amazing.

Freddie has also been under the care of The Teenage and Young Adult Cancer Trust team who have been a huge support to all of us as a family, and they have looked after us from an emotional aspect as well as explaining the things we didn’t quite understand. They have been the much-needed shoulder during difficult times.

The gardens have been a god-send and we have enjoyed getting out for little walks, meeting friends, and helping Freddie gain the strength back in his legs, as well as benefiting from the fresh air.

There is a huge beating heart of a team looking after patients and families, and it would mean a great deal if you could offer a little help to this amazing facility.

Freddie has completed his three-month chemo plan and will now be building strength back until his scans in 12 weeks’ time, at the end of February.

Chris - fondly known as Pampy by the grandchildren - was devastated by the news of Freddie’s diagnosis and he phoned and FaceTimed frequently to Freddie in the hospital. Freddie has been able to spend some quality time at home with Pampy in recent weeks, and they were a great support to each other.

Anyone undergoing cancer treatment, or being a family member by their side, should have the best facilities and care possible. The Queen’s Centre is a very special place with wonderful individuals helping those in need.
