Story

A couple of unfit blokes from Barclays Wealth Glasgow; Jamal Issa (me), and John Sherman have agreed to complete a gruelling 10k on June 20th 2010.

We're trying to raise as much as possible for the Beatson Oncology Centre fund. I've selected the Beatson, as they helped ton treat my brother in law, Ryan, before he lost his struggle with cancer earlier this year, aged just 26.

We want to help the Beatson for all the good work the centre can provide.

A wee bit about the centre..

The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre serves the population of the West of Scotland.  It is the leading centre for the delivery of non-surgical cancer care for this area and is the second largest Cancer Treatment Unit in the United Kingdom.  The Centre provides a very wide-ranging and diversified service from a multi-disciplinary team of staff.

The Centre is involved not just in treating patients but also in carrying out clinical and laboratory research which allows us to investigate possible new treatments of cancer and to look into causes of cancer as well.  The research which is carried out is obviously costly and depends upon grants from large cancer organisations and also money raised locally which is given to our Fund.

The Beatson Oncology Centre Fund was established to manage donations to the Centre and this has evolved as a Fund which provides extras for the care and comfort of our patients attending for treatment, training and education of staff within the Centre, purchase of major equipment/capital items and supports minor research projects. We endeavour to keep the Centre as attractive as possible and to see that the most up to date useful pieces of nursing equipment are available.  Anything supported by the Fund would not otherwise be funded from NHS resources and, therefore, donations are very welcome and valued.
