Story
Most group B Strep infections in newborn babies are preventable. When they happen, they can be devastating, causing septicaemia, meningitis and pneumonia. In the UK, the numbers of babies infected are rising: our prevention strategy has failed.
Please donate generously so that my favourite charity, Group B Strep Support, can continue to press for a better prevention of these usually avoidable infections, and raise awareness so families can make informed choices about what is best for them and their babies. Too many babies are still suffering the effects of avoidable group B Strep infection - the financial and emotional cost is huge.
My story is that my second baby, Theo, died just 17 hours after his very early birth from group B Strep infection. We were devastated. Frankly, it's unlikely his infection could have been prevented - certainly not with the UK's current strategy, nor even with testing. But we found out that other babies' infections and deaths could be prevented, and that they weren't. That continues to drive me and the charity to push for change. Things are better now than they were in 1996 - GBS prevention guidelines were implemented in the UK in 2003, but they've failed to reduce the rate or number of these infections. We need better prevention - such as that routinely offered in so many developed countries, including France, Germany, Spain, the US, Canada, Hong Kong .... the list goes on.
