Story
I work as a counsellor at SARSAS, an organisation that supports survivors of rape and sexual abuse. Working within the organisation I see first hand the positive impact the support and campaigning from SARSAS can have on an individual, as well as the wider community.
Many victim-survivors say that even though the abuse ended a long time ago, they still struggle with lots of elements of their life, this can be mental health, relationships or just taking care of themselves. For some people, managing their symptoms can become so difficult they have thoughts of ending their own life. Nearly half of the people SARSAS support have survived an attempt to end their own life. It is not unusual for victim-survivors to believe in some way, that what happened to them, was their fault. People often believe that they did something wrong, that they should have said or done something differently. These feelings can stop someone from getting the help they need and deserve. It shouldn’t be like this.
The work that SARSAS does is very close to my heart, any donations will be greatly appreciated 💜
