Jayne Buckley is raising money for OPERATION HERNIA

Hernias are a huge burden in low resource countries. Hernias can be debilitating. Access to timely surgery is inadequate due lack of resources or poor finances. Some hernia sufferers in these countries, therefore, die needlessly from complications of hernias. Operation Hernia is committed to alleviating the suffering of hernia patients in these disadvantaged countries. We achieve this by offering a hernia service and by training local doctors in hernia surgery. All our surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and technicians are volunteers who fund themselves. All monies raised through donations go towards treatment of patients and training of local doctors. Your donation will transform a hernia sufferer's life. Thank you for your donation.

Story

I have the opporunity to travel to Ghana for the third year running with Operation Hernia. I will be travelling with  a Surgical team of nurses and doctors to Takoradi. The team is made up of nurses and doctors from Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, Northern Ireland and Yorkshire. The team have all volunteered their time and raise money for the trip. We will be providing a Surgical team in three hosptials, The Hernia centre in Takoradi hospital, Dixcove and Ports Authority Hospital (GPHA). Last year we performed 101 hernia operations and assisted with 3 emergancy caesarian sections.

Hernia repairs are very common in Britain but due to proverty, lack of medical resourses and very limited access to hospitals they are not treated. The patients we operate on are mainly fishermen and farmers, these people are usually the main earners in their extended families. The hernias are all different sizes from very small to very large. (The large ones we would never see here in Britain). Many have  had their hernias for ten years or more.Once they have had their surgery they are able to return to work and earn money for their families.

I have seen how this surgery changes so many peoples lives and feel honoured to be given the chance to be part of a surgical team this year.

I will be giving up 10 days of my leave to be able to go on this worth while trip. I am very lucky to have the support of my husband and son who I leave at home while I go and be part of the surgical team.

This valued trip touches the lives of so many people. I am looking forward to the trip. It is hard work but I would not give up this chance of returning to Ghana for the 3rd year.

Thank you for your kind support.

Jayne
