Living in Mumbai for nine months and seeing so much poverty on my doorstep I wanted to try and help. I am walking for six great charities, three in Mumbai and three in Gujarat, to help the poorest and most disadvantaged sectors of society.
The three in Mumbai were all founded by British people, and are supporting waste pickers on a dumpsite, a school for slum dwellers and an NGO working with young people through sport. In Gujarat the charities I have chosen support the deaf, leprosy sufferers and tribal people. Links to the websites for these charities are below.
I am collecting the money for them through the Seema Sharma Foundation which will distribute the money directly to the charities, all costs associated with the walk have been covered through corporate sponsorship. Seema (who featured on Channel 4's Slumdog Secret Milllionaire) will be doing some of the walk with me.
The walk is 240 miles through the Gujarat countryside and follows the same route as Gandhi's famous Salt March 80 years ago. It will take 17 days, with a couple of rest days. We will be staying in vans - as there are no local pubs en route! I hope to have several people joining me at different stages. We have a website , www.indiaukfriendshipwalk.com with all the details and I will have GPS so you can see where we have got to!
Thank you for your support. Please dig deep and donate now.
