As many of Mark and Jo's friends know, Jo was diagnosed with TTP (Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura) in October 1995.  TTP is a rare life threatening condition which claims lives regularly.  Since 1995 Jo has relapsed 3 more times and has survived.  The key to her survival was the early diagnosis and the superb treatment she has received at University College London Hospital (UCLH) and the John Radcliffe in Oxford. (not to mention Dr Barton who spotted it initally).

Jo & Mark have been invited to take part in a sponsored bike ride around Richmond Common to raise money for TTP Research being done at UCLH,   Its only 7 miles but neither Jo or Mark have ridden a bike for at least 10yrs!

TTP affects just 1 to 4 people in every million.  Much work has been done in recent years and a defective enzyme has been identified but there is still no magic cure.  Treatment includes a daily regime of plasma exchange (a little like dialysis) steriods and in some cases chemotherapy type drugs.  Getting better is a watching and waiting game that can often take months and months, if you are that lucky.

Because TTP is not as well known as Cancer and some other conditions, funding is sparce and therefore research takes longer.
