Fundraising for AfriKids
Story
Hello chaps, just thought I’d let you know that on the 12th of June 2010 I will be running a distance of 100km around London for the charity Afrikids. I am currently studying Post Grad in International Development during which I stumbled across Afrikids. Being mightily impressed with their work, I decided it might be a jolly good idea to go for a little jog....
Well quite a long jog....just over 63 miles actually....
I can hear your brilliant brain boxes bursting with the rudimentary rumblings that follow such a proposition! ‘Who the devil are these Afri chaps and what do they want with old Joe??’ Well I’ll tell you;
“Change must not breed reliance; if the solution is not sustainable then it’s not development” – Afrikids
Afrikids is an award winning child rights organisation working to improve life for Ghana’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged children. It recognises the necessity in development to LISTEN to what the community knows it needs, EMPOWER them to make the necessary changes themselves and to ensure ABSOLUTE SUSTAINABILITY.
As well financing and delivering sustainable child rights projects, AfriKids owns and runs a number of businesses including a medical centre, an eco-lodge and several ethical trade programmes.
The profit from these feed back into the organisation and within the next decade AfriKids Ghana will raise all of its funds this way. As well as driving jobs and money into the economy this income generation will give it complete independence from charitable handouts and western aid. When this happens AfriKids’ fundraising services in the UK will become redundant and the UK fundraising office will close down!
Hopefully you’ve taken a few moment of your very busy facebook browsing to read this. If you have I’m sure you’ll agree Afrikds is awesome! It is incredibly inspirational and a viable model for future NGOs!
I will be hosting numerous fundrasing events for the run and any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated! This is the greatest challenge I have ever undertaken.
Please give as generously as you wish. This is not about handouts; this is facilitating an opportunity for people themselves, to combat the multiple faces of deprivation. A dignity wrought from the pennies you give.
