We provide help and hope to everyone living with dementia.

Story

On the 14th of June, 14 walkers from Thomson Snell & Passmore will embark on a 100km trek along the Jurassic Coast in Dorset to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Society. Over the course of three days we will test our physical endurance on this challenging and beautiful route, sleeping in youth hostels along the way.

We are trekking to support people living with dementia today and to help find a cure for tomorrow. Dementia is not a natural part of ageing. It is caused by diseases of the brain, like Alzheimer’s disease, and has a devastating effect on thousands of families. The symptoms include confusion, problems with logic and communication, memory loss and problems carrying out simple everyday tasks like dressing, washing or even swallowing.

There are over 800,000 people with dementia in the UK today, and 1 in 3 people over the age of 65 will develop dementia. Alzheimer’s Society exists to make sure that none of these people have to go through dementia alone. They are the UK’s leading support, care and research charity for people with dementia, their families and carers. They:

  • provide a network of local support services, helping people with dementia to live full, active lives.

  • provide expert information and advice both on a local level, and through their National Dementia Helpline and website.

  • campaign for a world where people affected by dementia have their needs fully met.

  • fund pioneering research, helping us to better understand the condition and work towards a cure.

By taking on the 100km Jurassic Coast Trek this summer, Thomson Snell & Passmore staff hope to raise at least £5,000. This is enough to pay for 10 three hour Dementia Café sessions, where people with dementia can socialise, stay active, and gain information and practical tips to help them cope with their condition. £5000 could also pay for the chemicals and consumables needed for a PhD researcher for 6 months, to continue vital research into understanding the causes of dementia, how it can be treated and, ultimately, to find a cure.

Thank you for supporting our fundraising efforts. Together we can transform the lives of people affected by dementia.
