Story
Dear family and friends
As most of you know I will have a certain “large” birthday later this year and it seems I am having a mid-life crisis. I have been thinking for a while now that I wanted to do something for the “community” and “for me” so I have taken a huge step and committed to join a Fund raising activity with a team from Wigan & Leigh Hospice. Seven of us have undertaken the challenge to Trek and camp in very basic conditions in the Himalayas in September this year. We will be trekking at altitude and covering many miles each day. We are all committed to raise much needed funds for the Hospice.
Why have I chosen the Hospice as my Charity? As a family we received great support and care when we needed it for my Dad and his brother, my Uncle Albert. The Hospice and the wonderful staff were there when we needed help the most. My Mum was also a big supporter of the Hospice.
Why is this such a big challenge for me? Basically I am not fit!!!!! I have been very busy over the last 20 years “following the flag” and have not committed to any fitness training for far too long. I think the last big walk I did was when I did my Queens Scout Expedition and I haven’t even owned a pair of boots since then! I have also not camped since then. It will be a mental challenge as I believe even the route to get to the Himalayas is “interesting” in itself and don’t even go there about showers and toilets (or lack of....)
So please follow my story as I train for this physical and mental challenge. If you are able to, please can you consider making a donation to the Hospice? Or just put a comment on my Facebook page to keep me focused or to give me a laugh as I am training. I am fully funding my trip myself so every penny donated will be paid directly to the Hospice.
