Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

We are taking part in the Acorns Children's Hospice Trust - Skydive for Acorns! on 30/05/2010 to raise money for Acorns Children's Hospice Trust and we'd really appreciate your support.

JustGiving sends your donation straight to Acorns Children's Hospice Trust and automatically reclaims Gift Aid if you're a UK taxpayer. Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - We raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

Acorns is a registered charity which relies almost entirely on voluntary donations and outside support. We want to raise as much as we can because it costs £450 per day per child, and we need your help.

Acorns Children’s Hospice cares for children and young people who have life limiting and life threatening conditions across the heart of England. This means they are unlikely to reach adulthood as a cure for their condition cannot be found. Acorns provides short break, emergency and end-of-life care, with a community team to support the family 24-hours a day, seven days a week. Acorns has helped well over 1,500 families in the last 21 years. They currently support over 500 children and families but there are an estimated 1,600 families in our catchment area who meet the criteria. Acorns has three 10 bed hospices: Acorns in Birmingham (situated in Selly Oak), Acorns in the Black Country (situated in Walsall) and Acorns for the Three Counties (situated in Worcester). The hospices are designed to be a home-from-home in order to help children enjoy their stay and make the most of every day. Games rooms, soft-play areas, gardens and lots of toys ensure a happy stay. The hospices have therapeutic facilities such as hydrotherapy pools and multi-sensory rooms. Special adolescent wings ensure privacy for older children.  They cannot change the fact that a child will die but they can provide specialist care for them. Please help Acorns to support local life .

One family that Acorns has helped is the Harvey Family. Josh sadly died three years ago, but not a day goes by that he is not thought of. We all are doing this jump for Josh. xx

Want to know more about what we are doing?

Imagine standing at the edge of an open doorway in an aircraft flying at 10,000 feet - the noise of the engines and the wind ringing in your ears with only the outline of distant fields below. Now imagine leaning forward out of that doorway and letting go - falling forward into the clouds, diving down through the air as you start freefalling at over 120mph! Then imagine the peace and quiet as the canopy opens, the steering toggles come down either side of you and you begin a tranquil parachute descent from a mile up in the air, steering yourself back down to the centre of the drop zone below.   Well thats what we're doing!  The jump is called a 'Tandem Skydive'. It is a Skydive because we will be freefalling through the air (without the parachute deployed) for several thousand feet; it is in Tandem because we will be harnessed to a professional parachute instructor at all times throughout the descent .  Thats worth a few quid isn't it???????????
