CAB is a charity - many people
don't know that. And as a charity it has to raise enough funds to keep
its doors open and the advice flowing. In these difficult times that
income is very hard to come by. For instance, the local council funding
for this coming year and the next is lower than it was last year. Yet the
advice on offer is needed now more than ever before as families face
redundancies, reduction in income, the risk of losing their homes, and much
more. That's why June is raising
funds by running the Great Welsh Marathon on 18th April. She is a
former volunteer advisor and currently a trustee at Tunbridge Wells
and District Citizens Advice Bureaux and would appreciate a donation from you
to support the excellent work that all the CAB team put in with hundreds of
local people week in, week out. Here’s what happened…The training was long and hard
during the worst winter in 30 years.
But those ‘miles in the bank’ paid off with interest on marathon
day. It was warm. It was sunny. Not what I was used to! After 2 hours I felt sick and only wanted to sip water. My partner Luke was insistent – “you must
force yourself to eat, you will regret it later if you don’t take energy on
board now”.So I force-fed myself jelly
babies and sports drink – and kept going. And going. My strategy to start slow and then just hang in there began
to pay off as I overtook faster runners.
I finished with a strong surge of speed and a smile on my face – after
four and a half hours. If I can do
this I can do anything!
The Tunbridge Wells CAB answers over 17,000 queries per year from the residents of Tunbridge Wells and the surrounding areas, on topics ranging from financial planning to consumer rights. 2009 is the 70th anniversary of the Tunbridge Wells Bureau, which opened on the 4th September 1939.
