It's not just a Walk in the Park! Sunday October 18th
Is an annual three mile walk for all abilities and ages around Oxford University Parks. This great family event is raising funds for extra facilities for the Oxford Cancer and Heart Centres. 450 people took part last year raising over £30,000.00.
The new Oxford Cancer Centre, on the Churchill Hospital site in Headington, has now opened its doors to patients. While the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust has invested £109 million in the new facility, a £2 million fundraising campaign is continuing to further enhance patient comfort.
One in three of us will suffer from some form of cancer in our lifetime. Medical advances have come a long way in recent years in the treatment and research of cancer, but it’s still the single biggest killer in the UK today.
The money is being used to fund additional pieces of high-tech equipment that go above and beyond current NHS standards, such as Computer Integrated Theatres (CITs), which enable surgeons to perform more keyhole surgery. This is less invasive for patients and often results in quicker recovery times and less chance of infection. The campaign is also raising money to improve the healing environment for patients, by landscaping outdoor terraces, furnishing day rooms and providing things like pressure-relieving mattresses.
